The SL28, SL34 & Ruiru11 Coffee Varietals
The SL 28 has a high potential for cup quality but is susceptible to serious diseases. This cultivar was originally from Kenya and is now found in Malawi, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. It has also spread to parts of Latin America. According to World Coffee Research, “SL28” was selected by the former Scott Agricultural Laboratories. (Tree selections at Scott Laboratories between 1935-1939 were prefixed SL )… SL28 in 1935 was chosen from a single Tree in a Population called Tanganyika Drought-Resistant. The variety can be grown at medium to high elevations and is resistant to drought. However, it is susceptible to major coffee diseases. SL28 is known for its rusticity, which means that it can go unattended for many years and even decades before returning to successful production. In many parts of Kenya, some SL28s are 60 to 80 years old but still productive.”
SL 34 is a tough varietal that has adapted to high altitudes. However, it is susceptible to the coffee berry virus and requires good rainfall. This varietal is characterized by its tall stature and dark bronze shoot tips. It also produces large berries. Recent tests have shown that it is genetically connected to the Typica family. World Coffee Research states that “SL34 was selected in Kenya during the late 1930s by the Scott Agricultural Laboratories. For more information on Scott Labs, see SL28. The Scott Laboratories of Kenya in the period 1935-1939 prefixed individual tree selections with “SL.” SL34, for example, was selected by a single tree at the Loresho Estate, Kabete in Kenya, since the research conducted at the Scott Laboratories often involved local estate owners.
Ruiru 11, a dwarf hybrid with high yields, is resistant to both coffee leaf disease and coffee berry disease. It is commonly grown in Kenya. It is a composite made up of several varieties, including Catimor, SL28, and N39 (male parent), and a selection of other K7, SL28, and Rume Sudan (female parents). According to World Coffee Research, “Ruiru 11 is a composite variety made of many varieties, including Catimor (female parent) and a multi cross selection of K7, SL28, N39… Rume Sudan and others (male parent). This crisis spurred action. In the 1970s, the Ruiru coffee research station, which gave Ruiru its name, started an intensive breeding program for varieties that are immune to CBD. Ruiru 11 was developed in 1985 as a result of this breeding program.

The Kasinga Farmers Co-op Society has over 1800 members and is a part of the Machakos Co-operative Union. This union focuses on funding youth and women groups, as well as sustainability programs. The MCULtd is a group of 34 coffee societies that are committed to sustainable coffee production, processing, and marketing within Machakos County. Kasinga FCS falls under this umbrella.
