Secret Santa can be a great way to get you and your colleagues into the holiday spirit. This also promotes a feeling of togetherness amongst the team and helps boost morale. It’s the perfect way to spice up your office Christmas party.

What is Secret Santa?

Secret Santa is an annual Christmas tradition. Members of a group choose Secret Santas. The idea is to share gifts amongst the group without spending a fortune on each individual.

Please make a list of all the people who want to attend and place their names on a hat. Then, everyone draws a name. It is up to them to purchase a gift for the person they have drawn. It’s anonymous, so you don’t have to worry about who bought the gift. But you will be happy when your recipient opens yours.

What is The White Elephant Version?

White Elephant is slightly different and adds an extra level of fun. Instead of buying for one person, everyone buys generic gifts and puts them in a pool. Then, each participant draws a number and chooses a gift from the pile according to the number. So, the number 1 is drawn first, followed by 2, and so forth. As each person selects a present, they have the option to keep it or “steal,” i.e., take the gift that was chosen before. This continues until everyone has received a gift. It’s better to pick a higher number so that you are the last one. That way, you can choose from all the gifts!

Why people choose Secret Santa over regular gifts

Secret Santa brings people together, builds camaraderie, and is inexpensive, safe, and easy to organize. This is a cheaper alternative to buying gifts for all members of the group. It’s expensive enough to buy Christmas gifts for your family!

Secret Santa ideas and budgeting

Keep the price low, as Christmas is already a costly time for many people. This will encourage more people to participate.

Prices can range from $10 to $20 for a typical office or $50 for professionals such as accountants and lawyers who may have more money. Ask the group for feedback if you are unsure.

Encourage creativity rather than high budgets. Set a theme everyone can follow, such as superhero movies, jigsaw puzzles, or a rule that all presents must be the same color. You could turn it into an office bake-off with delicious treats if your team is very hands-on. You could also donate, like giving a goat as a gift to a family that is in need.

Make Secret Santa Fun!

Get involved. This is a great team-building activity for all, even if your personal Christmas tastes are not very festive.

Keep to the rules. This includes things like price limits. It’s a bit jerky to spend $50 on a present when the limit is only $10. This makes those who adhere to a budget feel cheap. It also makes you appear a little arrogant.

Be creative and have fun. Keep the practical ideas for Aunt Betty. It would be best if you instead chose someone that they would not buy for themselves. A coffee mug or business card holder that reflects your coworker’s personality is a great gift.

Subtly get to know the person for whom you are buying. Find out what their interests are, and then find a unique gift to match. If they like Lego in secret, buy them a Lego mug. Avoid things that they dislike. Don’t, for example, buy Bob Hersey Peanut Butter Cups if he is allergic to nuts.

Do not be tight-fisted. Don’t be that guy who doesn’t purchase a gift or buys a second-hand DVD with scratches. You can still give something of value if you’re tight on money. Make cookies, or make a cool gadget, such as a trophy wine stopper, or frame a picture.

It’s not the time to be insensitive. You still have to maintain a professional work environment and adhere to anti-discrimination and workplace ethics. Plus, nobody likes a tool.

Do not stress out about finding the perfect gift. This is not a contest. If you plan, you won’t be rushed into buying something at the store.

Secret Santa for Christmas: How to Organise it

You’ve been assigned the task of organizing the Secret Santa in the office. What you need to do…

Basics:

  1. Secret Santa is usually held at a party for Christmas. In this case, your invitation to the party should contain all of the necessary information.
  2. Send out the invitations as soon as possible so that people have time to plan and buy a present.
  3. RSVPs are needed as soon as possible because we’ll need to know who is going into the draw.
  4. Name the people who have said yes.
  5. Tell each Secret Santa who they are buying gifts for. Remind them that the fun part is keeping the gift a surprise and not revealing it to others.
  6. Allow participants plenty of time to buy gifts.

Handy hints:

Get your terminology straight. In some areas, Secret Santa is called Kris Kringle, and in others, White Elephant Gift Exchange. Find out which terms people are familiar with by asking around.

Include the price limit. Your eager Santas will want to know how much they should spend. $10-$25 is usually a good amount. Often, the lower the price, the more creative and funnier the gifts, so don’t feel the need to set the bar too high. Mention the price on the invitation so people know whether they can afford to participate, and leave it open-ended so those who don’t have the budget don’t feel pressured into taking part.

Set a short RSVP. It’s better to move up the RSVP date than force people to rush their gift shopping. Depending on how big your team is, how busy people are, or how frequently they check their emails or messages, set the initial RSVP to between 1 and 3 days. And follow up with people you haven’t heard back from to ensure they don’t feel left out.

Leave the fine details for later. There’s lots of information you could give your invitees, but often, it’s better to keep the initial invite short and sharp and only include information people really need to decide. Reserve the rules, gift guides and hints and tips for a fun gift for when you notify your Santas of who they’ve drawn.

How to choose a fun gift!

When choosing a funny gift, keep the joke simple and, ideally, one that makes sense to everyone – especially the recipient. The last thing you want to do is offend or confuse someone, so if you’re going for a more risque approach, judge your work environment and be sure that people will find it funny.
