We add our coffee to the “mental health” section of budget worksheets. Avocado toast is also included. This keeps first-time home buyers from entering the housing market despite the rising costs.

As coffee prices rise, we will see the Australian coffee menu change.

Some may not be aware of this, but those in the coffee business have done their best to cope with the global coffee crop loss, the decreasing availability or choice of single origins for our coffee blends, and the increasing variability in green bean quality.

It’s a bit of a teacup storm. A series of unfortunate incidents have made it difficult to get a consistent supply or guarantee. It is like trying to squeeze crema from an old coffee bean.

What does this mean for Aussies who would fight to the end before giving up their morning sparkling bean juice?

One obvious solution is to purchase quality office coffee machines at a reasonable price. There’s a good reason to buy quality home coffee machines. But there are more positives than just brewing.

The coffee shortage began in 2021

Two main factors are responsible for the sudden increase in coffee prices: Climate Change and transportation problems.

Our coffee farmers are bearing the brunt as weather conditions become more unpredictable and extreme.

Severe weather conditions in 2021 wiped out the largest coffee bean producer. Brazil produces and exports 40% of all coffee in the world. In 2021, it was hit by two severe frosts and a drought.

Minas Gerais, one of Brazil’s main coffee-producing regions, lost 3.45 million bags (60kg) in a single swoop. Compare that with the 49 million bags of coffee that Brazil produces annually. That figure gives a good idea of the amount of damage that will be done to the country and to importing nations.

The current price of green coffee beans is expected to continue to rise as other major coffee producers, such as Indonesia, predict a decreased supply due to lighter crops.

The financial data in the chart of global coffee prices is proof, and we coffee lovers are wailing a bit.

Coffee as a global commodity has increased by an alarming 84.7% over a year starting in April 2021.

Figure 2 below shows the steep rise in price from $130 per unit (60kg bags) in April 2021 to over $236 per item today. Projections show that the rate is expected to continue to climb to at least $250 per item.

Figure 2: The price of coffee has increased by 84.7% in the last four years, according to the trading on the contract for difference (CFD), which tracks the benchmark commodity market.

The pandemic started the great supply chain disruption, and recovery is painfully slow.

COVID-19 has caused delays, shortages, and interruptions all over the world. When we complain about the postman’s late delivery of our online orders, freight and shipping are not things that most people think about.

You may have wondered how green, raw coffee beans reach our shores. They arrive almost exclusively via sea. We have all experienced first-hand international travel restrictions, different testing and isolation procedures, and staff shortages because of illness or death. It’s been happening at home, on a smaller level, and in the global logistic space as well. The rising fuel prices combined with port processes are making the situation worse.

While coffee production in Australia is increasing, it will not be enough to meet the demand for many decades.

The coffee industry will have to adapt to the new challenges.

Our coffee-loving customers’ price increases are not solely the result of dramatic world events such as natural disasters or global infectious diseases pandemics.

Prices have steadily risen for coffee roasters and cafe owners over the past few years. The cafes and coffee roasters kept the costs in their pockets as long as possible, finding ways to save money elsewhere so that they could pass on costs to customers. Every cost has risen over the past five years for both producers and businesses.

Australian coffee roasters, cafes, and retailers haven’t passed on the price increase to their customers. They’ve cut margins extremely fine. When that runs into

  • Green coffee bean prices are up by almost 85%
  • – Quality inconsistency and disruption of supply
  • Transport costs are dramatically higher – fewer ships at sea and fewer trucks on the roads.
  • Utility and fuel prices are increasing.

Their cups overflow. To keep the coffee industry afloat, the coffee drinkers must share in the burden. It won’t be nearly as bad as it seems.

What is the current price of coffee in Australia?

A prediction that has been widely praised predicts the price of a 12oz regular latte to be around $7 by 2022. This is not particularly surprising when many cafes bravely made the jump in order to survive the lockdowns and remain open to their loyal clients during the pandemic.

Although it’s a big adjustment, coffee prices have been relatively stable at our local caffeine spots for the past half-decade. The price increases are not a surprise to coffee industry veterans.

What is the extent of destruction to global coffee supplies, logistics, availability of staff, and forever altered social landscapes? Yep, that’s new. It’s a lot of information to absorb.

The Australian coffee market is undergoing a disruptive change, and. We don’t yet know what will happen.

Disruptive changes are the kind that can cause major disruption to a business and its industry on a fundamental basis, and this happens suddenly and unexpectedly. There is often no time to prepare, and there are neither any solutions nor management systems.

It’s the challenges, re-inventions, and changes that will move entire industries either forward or backward. The outcome of the race depends on many factors. However, key factors include:

  • Financial Decisions: More Money, More Choices
  • – A willingness to embrace new ideas– Letting go of dead weight, even if painful. Accepting new processes, collaborations, and practices that work well in a new environment, even if they feel strange or foreign.
  • – Making decisions quickly– An agile pivot allows for more future gains and gives you more time to make mistakes that will lead to real solutions.
  • The balance between old and new. Both loyal customers and new customers should benefit as much as they can from a new business model.
  • High level of engagement with the community and customers. Actively voicing empathy is different from having it. If you don’t share your updates or story, no one will know.
  • Frequent and consistent communications In a world post-COVID, using social media, digital advertising, online presence, and traditional marketing techniques to reach, educate, and update customers is not negotiable.

The list is by no means exhaustive, and not everyone will be able to check off all of the items on their list. Our Lockdown Survival Guide discussed some of these ideas in the past year.

Quality is better than quantity. Appreciating local businesses and the small joys of life

It is both half-expected and half-scandalous to see our trusted friend join the price hikes. The final betrayal of a long and painful list of pains that have plagued us over the past two years! It’s not that bad; the coffee loves you as much as you do.

It’s just a tiny bit more expensive to visit a friend than it was last year. We all know that when we love something, we will find a solution. Few people predict that Australians will cut back on their coffee consumption if the price goes up a few dollars.

We are one of the coffee-loving cultures of the world. It isn’t easy to give up such a simple and essential comfort when the cost of living is soaring.

Three major benefits of coffee costing a bit more.

We’ll keep our coffee, thanks. If fuel costs more than $2 a liter, rents are astronomical, and Netflix threatens to ban password sharing, we won’t be drinking it. We’re going to enjoy it mindfully.

It’s no secret that gratitude is the buzzword of the moment. Still, there’s a good reason for it: it has been proven scientifically to increase happiness among those who consistently practice it. This practice does not have to be lengthy or involve doing anything.

To increase your gratitude, you need to be aware of the good things that happen to you. It’s a great day when you find a pair of matching socks, the air is pleasant, and your cup of coffee is freshly brewed.

Spending time with family and friends

Coffee is an activity that can be enjoyed both alone and with others. Coffee will become more expensive, and people will save their bean budget for rituals that are shared with others. The Australian social culture has long included coffee, and this won’t change anytime soon.

Understanding and Appreciation

You need to ask questions and pay attention to the answers if you want to understand why you are paying more.

It’s never a negative thing to learn more about something you love and become more aware of the process that brought it into your hands. The more you know about coffee, the less confident you are. Coffee professionals are eager to share their knowledge about this complex and fascinating topic. Talk to your barista or roaster, take a course on coffee, learn a new way to brew at home, and spend seven hours on Wikipedia. Be curious

The disruption to the world’s economy was not the most pleasant way to learn about priorities. But it certainly helped us put things into perspective. The conclusion we reached was not new. It was an old one – love and quality.
