The photo of a $14 croissant with ham and cheddar in Melbourne perfectly sums up the state of dining in Australia. It has triggered a backlash on social media.

A Reddit user asked, “Is this right?”. He was met by dozens of angry food lovers who smashed what they believed was price gouging.

Some users compared it to recent purchases. One user noted that they had paid $10.90 the day before for a croissant, coffee, and tea.

The social media user responded, “This place is ripping people off.”

These used to be a staple of my weekends, but now I’ve stopped buying them because everyone charges $10+. Another person wrote: “It’s not fair to charge this much for food that costs only $3.”

Another Redditor said, “I can’t afford to go out for lunch when the price is half that. I don’t really care either way.”

“Wow, this is exactly what I was talking about. It’s outrageous that you can’t even afford breakfast.”

Someone said that they would not pay for the “pig to attend Harvard”.

“I would not pay that price at an airport owned and operated by Macquarie Bank. Let alone anywhere else I had a choice.” The comment stated: “I don’t mind if the chef was French and that the pig went to Harvard before ethically giving his leg.”

Several people said that they have stopped eating in cafes because of rising costs.

A few weeks ago, angry diners attacked a Sydney café for charging almost $20 for banana cake. Many said it was “un-Australian” and a “rip-off”.

Yesterday, the anonymous Sydneysider who shared the shocking information posted a photo of the cafe menu on the social media discussion platform Reddit.

They wrote: “Surely $18 is a lot for banana bread to be taken away” alongside the post.

The photo quickly became viral on Twitter, with hundreds of comments from diners who shared their opinions about the price.

Some people were “disgusted”, while others were more shocked by the price tag of the avocado toast. It would cost you $25.

A user commented, “I am just obsessed with the avocado toast at $25!”
